To me, it's about allaying suspicion by diverting the audience's attention from the simple truth, rather than denying it outright. Change the subject, make a joke, focus on something else. Trying to read intent for the magic effect... if you're treating the scarf as a table (with volunteers - so it's a working surface more than a container) - how about doing the James Lewis routine? Or even use parts of Deal Dill's triangle routine?
