Re: Stewart James

Just found a trick called 'My Answer' by Stewart James on page 5 of the October, 1988 issue of Precursor magazine. This is issue 21 and was a tribute issue to Howard P. Lyons. The trick in question is a book test using a Billy Graham book. I don't recognize the trick. So I think there is a good chan...

Re: The Jerx Year Three

I don't worship Andy. I worship Richard Dawkins. I am convinced he is the Son of God. As for what Andy is preaching. Well - let me see if I can find a post setting out his position. Actually - he had a post recently where he makes the point I want to make. In terms of how magicians (or virgin magic ...

Re: The Jerx Year Three

I read the latest issue (issue 11 - Dec) of JAMM last night. It is sad there is only one more issue to go. But then again - I am looking forward to getting them all printed off and bound. I never feel like I can properly process a work until I can hold it in my hands. Still - I am sure Andy has plen...

Re: The Jerx Year Three

He does a much better job with this performance on UK TV. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVWUHwLw4vc It is a nice balance of informal and scripted. It is a structured close-up performance where suddenly shifting to a scripted presentation is not as jarring as it was on the Dutch chat show in the cl...

Re: The Jerx Year Three

About Tommy Wonder. I always felt he had poor advice when it came to doing impromptu magic. His advice was to pack a bunch of tricks in your pocket. And then wait at a party until somebody needed something. Such as a light for their cigarette or a pen or something. And when you had their attention -...

Re: The Jerx Year Three

Yeah - Andy thinks mental misdirection is the key. Spectators are always going to be suspicious. And that is not going to go away. So it is up to you to direct that suspicion somewhere . The post resonated with me in terms of The Too Perfect theory. My guess is that one side of the debate has this i...

Something different from Andy today. Some interesting thoughts analyzing the concept of "misdirection". http://www.thejerx.com/blog/2017/12/5/redirecting-misdirection Andy takes issue with Tommy Wonder's discussion of this topic. So this post should be of interest to everyone. I am not sur...

Re: Max Maven's new DVDs

Another comment from The Magic Cafe: I've binge watched the complete set. Now I'm very, very tired. By the way, "Pocket Nightmare" - undisclosed for nearly 40 years - is worth the price of "Kayfabe" alone. The material is top notch, ableit mostly based on cards. Most of the effec...

Re: The Jerx Year Three

In the post above, Andy touches on the Gilbreath Principle: This technique is an easy way to generate very intriguing implied methods. Let me put an example into Magician-ese. If I said, "I have a trick I want to show you. It's kind of based on the Gilbreath principle, but it starts with a borr...

Re: Max Maven's new DVDs

Here is a clarification from Max (over at The Magic Café) about the contents of the DVDs. The person proclaimed that in the four-DVD set, “everything single thing he did was card magic, nothing else.” The set runs over nine hours. It includes two substantial routines of stage mentalism that involve ...

Just saw this review on The Magic Cafe. Apparently some members of the EMC were sent the DVD's early. It feels like it has been a quiet year for books. The highlight of my year has been getting JAMM (http://www.thejerx.com) in my inbox each month. I have often heard magicians say that you should look to things outside magic for inspiration. That is something I had a problem putting into action. It was hard for me to picture how you could translate something you loved in a movie or comedy sketch into a magic trick. Happily - Andy had a great p...

I love the ingenuity of this deck. I can't wait to make use of them in some novel magic tricks. It seems to me that these cards essentially allow you to do faro shuffle tricks without the need for any sleight of hand. Most magicians perform for one of three reasons. 1) They are getting paid. 2) They want attention. 3) They want feedback on a trick they created or have just learned. As a result - most performances of magic are by people using magic for the wrong reason (they want attention) or because they are cha...

I hate hoarding stuff. And one of the downsides of magic is you do end up accumulating a lot of stuff. I find ebooks are quite useful now. You can get rid of all your magic magazines and know you can still track down stuff in the archives if need be. Very useful. And it gives you the best of both wo...
